To be more positive, you must feed your mind.
Feed Your Mind for New Beliefs
Beliefs are built upon information. If you want to change your beliefs, you need new information. For example, if you think the world is a mostly negative place you can’t believe otherwise until you see, experience, or learn information that counter your belief. If you have negative beliefs about something, actively seek new information that sheds new light or counters these beliefs. This will help you see things from a new perspective and possibly identify with new beliefs.
Feed Your Mind for More Motivation
Knowledge is the foundation of motivation. Back in the day, smokers smoked without a care in the world. That is until their throats started becoming irritated, they developed bad coughs, and studies were published linking ill health to smoking. This knowledge that they gained through experience and through study motivated people to stop smoking. If you want a little more motivation on your journey to being more positive, know that there are huge benefits to cultivating a more positive mind:
This is one of my favorite TED Talks. Skip to around 10:20 to get to the heart of the matter. Shawn Achor is a psychologist who explains scientifically researched benefits of positivity and scientifically researched ways on how to be more positive.
The Benefits of Positivity
“Your brain at positive performs significantly better than it does at negative, neutral, or stressed. Your intelligence rises, your creativity rises, your energy levels rise, in fact, what we’ve found is that every single business outcome improves. Your brain at positive is 31% more productive that your brain at negative, neutral, or stressed. You’re 37% better at sales. Doctors are 19% faster, more accurate at coming up with the correct diagnosis.”
Train Your Brain for Positivity
- Gratitude Journal: A study published in 2003 shows writing down 3 new things that you are grateful for each day for 21 days had a lasting effect of increasing positivity. This is because you train your mind to look for positivity, instead of negativity, and it becomes a habit.
- Exercise: exercise releases a gang of positive chemicals in the brain known as the ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters. They are serotonin, brain derived neutrophic factor, and endorphins. They are responsible for that “runner’s high” during exercise and promote happiness and relaxation.
- Random acts of kindness: Buy someone’s coffee for them, give a homeless man a dollar, or send a message of gratitude to someone. It’ll make you feel better.
Now you know how awesome being positive is, and how to be more positive, go do it! But wait there’s more…
You must expand your awareness. On the first level of awareness, you feel that circumstances affect how you feel, conditions control the course of your life, and the world is a crummy place. As you expand your awareness, you realize all this is false. You can do anything.
The number one way to increase awareness is to read powerful self development books. Listen to motivational audio programs. My favorites are anything by Tony Robbins, Les Brown, and Wayne Dyer. Filling your mind with positivity and motivation is so good for the mind.
Make Daily Progress
The opposite of growth is death. Every other living thing on this earth lives in harmony with this natural law. A flower soaks up water, does it’s whole photosynthesis deal, and spreads its roots every day. When these growth processes stop, the flower dies. A lion is constantly on the hunt. If he slacks too much, he gets slow, won’t be able to catch diner and will die. Humans are unique in that they have conquered the environment to such an extent that we can literally do nothing and make it through life. Survival, for the most part, is guaranteed… in the first world countries at least. This puts us in conflict with nature’s law. If we aren’t growing, we are in a sense dying of boredom, depression, stagnation or some other sad shit.
Everyday, make a commitment to grow in some aspect of your life. This is a very powerful practice. For one, it aligns you with the natural law. Growth = life. It gives you a new energy and vitality to make progress in any area of life. Secondly, it gets you moving. The more you move, the happier you will be. An empty mind is easy prey for negativity to creep into. Staying on the move will keep the mind engaged on a positive and worthy cause.
Positivity is Cool
Finally, positivity is cool. People like to be around positive people. You become a source of positive energy that feeds other people. It’s also fun. So fuck negativity. Be positive!
