Difficulty: 5/10 (Moderate)
Genre: Health, Nutrition
Main Idea: The standard American diet is wrong
Recommended For: Anyone interested in health and nutrition
Educational and fun read that explores the problems of the Western diet and then presents alternatives for a more healthy life. Nutritionism, the school of thought that contributes good health to only a few select nutrients, is now rampant in the food industry. This thinking allows food companies to label chips as a healthy choice if they have added fiber or wholewheat in the ingredients, completely disregarding the high fructose corn syrups and countless unpronounceable chemical additives and preservatives. He explores studies done on indigenous peoples of Alaska to the Australian desert whose health decreased after introduction to the Western diet, and the quick recovery they made when switching back to their native diet. Overall, it’s an interesting read with a simple message: eat food, natural, clean food.
A diet book for smart people
This is not a diet book, and even Pollan tells you he has no interest in giving you diet advice. However, the studies presented here, the research and the information make it a powerful resource to change your diet. One of the reasons I like books so much is because they present you with new perspectives and new information which can alter your beliefs. Since your life is based on your beliefs, books can literally change your life. This book does not try to tell you what you should do in order to achieve maximum health. It simply presents research that makes the adverse effects of the standard american diet very real. I would recommend anything that really wants to change their diet and health go strait to scientifically backed research instead of the less power pseudo-science that is rampant in the fad diet industry.
